Trip to Newport

Returned recently from a trip to Newport, Rhode Island with the family. My husband, two sons, and I stayed at the Residence Inn in Middletown. I had hoped to stay within walking distance of downtown Newport but this hotel was a great deal (used a Marriott free stay coupon) and was great for families. While waiting to check-in we had cookies and my two middle school age sons were delighted to find a guitar hero available to play just around the corner from the registration desk. The rooms, we had a studio, were immaculate and the pool area was equally so. The free breakfast the next morning has lots of good choices. Newport is a great area...this visit we checked out Fort Adams and learned about its place in history and just walked around the downtown where we found an arcade which kept the boys busy. Our favorite restaurant for families is the Brick Alley Pub, there is an extensive menu with a good children's menu as well.
Newport has plenty of other things for families to do; take a train ride on the Newport Scenic train, visit the mansions (there are special children's tours at some), or visit the nearby beach and cliffwalk. Look for after season sales at the Gap, and have a treat at Panera's (we like the lemonade, breakfast rolls and bagels). Just take a ride on Ocean Drive and stop and see the water, nothing is as wonderful as spending an hour just sitting by the ocean!
